Pupil Roles

At Wygate Park academy, pupil roles are a big part of helping children feel proud of their school and themselves. When children become reading ambassadors, playground buddies, eco warriors, house captains  or members of the school council, they learn that their ideas and actions make a difference. Taking on responsibilities helps them grow in confidence, work as a team and know that they have an important part to play in making school life even better.

We also link our pupil roles to the Voice 21 oracy project, which is all about speaking confidently and listening to others. When children represent their class, share ideas in meetings or help younger pupils, they learn how to communicate clearly and respectfully. This helps them build skills they will use throughout school and later in life—explaining their thinking, sharing their views and understanding others.

Pupil roles also help us live out our “No Outsiders” ethos and British Values every day. Children learn that everyone is welcome, everyone deserves a voice and everyone can get involved. They experience democracy through voting, learn about fairness and responsibility, and practise mutual respect by working with different people. At Wygate Park Academy, our pupil roles show children that everyone has something special to bring—and that together, we make our school the best it can be.
